How Your Pregnancy Due Date Is Calculated: Naegele's Rule and Beyond

Learn how Naegele's rule calculates your estimated due date by adding 280 days to your LMP, how ultrasound dating can refine it, and why only 4% of babies arrive on the EDD.

Estimating your due date

The tool applies Naegele's rule (LMP + 280 days), the standard method recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG Committee Opinion No. 700, 2017). Adjust your cycle length if it differs from 28 days to refine the estimate. Franz Karl Naegele published this formula in 1812 and it remains the most widely used clinical reference worldwide.

Key fields

  • LMP Enter the first day of your last menstrual period.
  • Cycle length The rule assumes 28 days. If your cycles are regular but different, adjust to refine the estimate.
  • Reference date Defaults to today; change it if you want the gestational age for another date.

Interpretation

The estimated due date is indicative. Many pregnancies conclude between weeks 38 and 41. Use the timeline to plan key milestones (scans, tests, birth plan).

Recommendations

  • Share the estimate with your care team and confirm gestational age with ultrasound.
  • Update the reference date after each check-up to track pregnancy progress.
