How It Works

Enter your systolic pressure (top number), diastolic pressure (bottom number), age and sex. The calculator uses AHA 2017 guidelines for adults (≥18) and AAP 2017 simplified tables for children (1–17). Results include classification, estimated population percentile, mean arterial pressure, and pulse pressure.

Methodology & Classification

This calculator classifies blood pressure using the 2017 ACC/AHA High Blood Pressure Clinical Practice Guideline (Whelton PB et al., Hypertension 2018), which lowered the hypertension threshold from 140/90 to 130/80 mmHg. The thresholds are: Normal (<120 AND <80 mmHg), Elevated (120-129 AND <80), Stage 1 Hypertension (130-139 OR 80-89), Stage 2 Hypertension (>=140 OR >=90), and Hypertensive Crisis (>180 AND/OR >120). The European ESC/ESH 2023 Guidelines for the Management of Arterial Hypertension (Mancia G et al., J Hypertens 2023) use a similar framework with Grade 1 (140-159/90-99) and Grade 2 (>=160/>=100) categories. Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) is calculated as: MAP = Diastolic + (Systolic - Diastolic) / 3.

AHA 2017 Adult Classification

Normal: <120/<80 mmHg | Elevated: 120–129/<80 | Stage 1: 130–139 or 80–89 | Stage 2: ≥140 or ≥90 | Crisis: >180 or >120. Diagnosis of hypertension requires readings confirmed on at least 2 separate occasions.

AAP 2017 Pediatric Classification

Normal: <90th percentile | Elevated: 90th–94th | Stage 1: ≥95th | Stage 2: ≥99th+5 or ≥140/90. Thresholds vary by age, sex, and height. This calculator uses simplified tables averaged across height percentiles.

1.

Measure blood pressure after sitting quietly for 5 minutes with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.

2.

Avoid caffeine, exercise, and smoking for at least 30 minutes before measuring blood pressure.

3.

Take multiple readings (at least 2) on separate occasions to confirm a diagnosis.
